Livi Cate Osborne

Recipient of Alta Woods Baptist's Christian Studies Scholarship at MC 2023-2024

She sent me this note when school was starting at MC.  (August 26, 2024)

The Alta Woods scholarship is so generous and has provided me with many great opportunities. I am now a double major in Christian Studies and Spanish. This past spring semester, I had the amazing opportunity to go on a study abroad trip to Guam. It was possible for me to go on this 2-week long trip because of the Alta Woods scholarship! I learned so much about the island and the people there, and had the opportunity to apply what I had learned to my future in mission work.

On Friday, August 30th, I will fly to Spain, where I will study for the next three months. I am doing a semester abroad through MC’s Study Abroad program. The continuing generosity of the Alta Woods Scholarship is helping to make this experience possible for me. I am excited to experience and learn so many new things. I will be studying at the University of Salamanca, where I will exclusively study the Spanish language. This will aid me in future mission work. I hope the Lord will send me to a Spanish-speaking country, but if not, I know he will equip me with the resources I need to serve in any country.

I look forward to returning to MC in January of 2025, and would be happy to visit Alta Woods and the people there to provide an update on my semester abroad, if you would like!

Thank you again for your generosity!

In Christ,

Livi Cate Osborne

AWBC collected needed group and personal items for the men.

    Home-based in Georgetown, MS

Men are required to attend Bible study and worship, work at a job each day on the campus, learn skills that will help them in their lives in the future, have personal quiet times with the Lord, attend classes without missing any… be respectful, accountable, dependable, faithful.

They produce some beautiful wall art, based on scripture. These items may be purchased at the main campus in Georgetown.

JESUS IS ALIVE! HE IS RISEN!

Can you say with the soldier at the cross, "truly, this was the son of god!"

Jesus Christ was crucified... he shed His blood and died on a Roman cross in Jerusalem witnessed by hundreds, perhaps thousands. BUT THREE DAYS LATER, HE AROSE FROM THE GRAVE AND WALKED ON THE EARTH FOR FORTY DAYS BEING SEEN BY HUNDREDS. He was the Sacrificial Lamb, making a way for us to be right with God by paying the debt for our sins on that old wooden cross.

    • That is the distinguishing fact between Christianity and all other world religions - we serve a risen Savior, One who has power even over death. The founders of all other religions have died never to be seen again. But not Jesus! For forty days, He was seen by, was touched by,  walked and talked and ate with others, all after He was raised from the dead. Emmanuel - God with us! He also possessed the authority and ability to disappear from their presence and reappear physically in their presence... only God can do that. Then he bodily ascended to heaven as  a number of his followers watched. Truly He was and is the Son of God!
    • Satan had done his worst, BUT God did His best!  Satan thought he had defeated God by killing his son, but it was in God's plan all along that Jesus must suffer and die as payment for our sins. We could never hope to be good enough to enter heaven on our own good works - our own goodness and righteousness is like filthy rags. The sin debt we all incurred must be reconciled and only Jesus as the sinless Son of God could pay that debt.   Our only hope for eternal life and for heaven is built on nothing less than Jesus' blood and righteousness.
    • That is great news, but the best news is yet to come.

Jesus promised that one day he's coming back!  He will come back for you if you will believe in your heart that Jesus Christ came to earth as God in the flesh... taking on the form of a man... that He died a sacrificial, substitute death on the cross for your sins and mine, was raised from the dead.  If you will confess with your mouth that you accept him as Lord of your life; then on the authority of the Word of God, the Holy Bible, you can avoid the punishment of sin, you can inherit eternal life, and you can begin a new life with God... a life that will never end. You can do that today right where you are.  If you truly mean it - and He will know if you are serious about Him - then He will come into your life and give you a new life, a new hope, a new purpose, and a new commitment to live a selfless life, surrendered only to Him.

My dear friend, all my sins are forgiven because I have put my faith and trust in my Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.  He is preparing a place for me in heaven and for all those who will receive Him as Savior and Lord.
Praise God... Jesus took our place on the cross so we could have a place in heaven!

His grace is sufficient for you.  He still saves all those who will come to him.  Romans 10:13... "For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved."     Revelation 3:10... "Behold I(Jesus) stand at the door and knock. If any man hear my voice and open the door I will come in to him."    You must open the door from the inside. Jesus will not force himself into your life.

"A Christian is an odd number anyway. He feels supreme love for One whom he has never seen, talks familiarly every day to Someone he cannot see, expects to go to heaven on the virtue of another, empties himself in order to be full, admits he is wrong so he can be declared right, goes down in order to get up, is strongest when he is weakest, richest when he is poorest, and happiest when he feels worst. He dies so he can live, forsakes in order to have, gives away so he can keep, sees the invisible, hears the inaudible, and knows that which passes knowledge."     A.W. Tozer

    In Remembrance of Bob Jones

    January 26, 1949  -  September 30, 2025

Robert Lee Jones, known affectionately as Bob, passed away on September 30, 2025, in Austin, Texas, after a brave battle with prostate cancer. Born January 26, 1949, in Eagle Lake, Texas, Bob’s life was marked by a steadfast faith, a gift for music, and a deep love for his family.

Bob Jones came to Alta Woods in 1988 after receiving the Master of Church Music degree from Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary in Ft. Worth, Texas and served as Minister of Music for eleven years. During his ministry, two additional groups were formed, including the Senior Adult Choir and the Church Orchestra.

The Alta Woods family extends our deepest sympathy to his wife, Marilyn, daughter Christi Masters, and son Jeremy Jones. His funeral service will be live-streamed from the Canyon Church, Dripping Springs, Texas on Wednesday. October 8 at 11 am.

    Spend a Minute with God

“Grow strong in the Light of My Presence. Your weakness does not repel Me. On the contrary, it attracts My Power, which is always available to flow into a yielded heart. Do not condemn yourself for your constant need of help. Instead, come to Me with your gaping neediness; let the Light of My Love fill you. A yielded heart does not whine or rebel when the going gets rough. It musters the courage to thank Me even during hard times. Yielding yourself to My will is ultimately an act of trust. In quietness and trust is your strength.”

    Psalm 116:5-7; Ephesians 5:20; Isaiah 30:15

    Jesus Calling by Sarah Young

    Protect our children

    From Kathy Thaggard

From the wisdom of Corrie ten Boom’s father:

“So the line had stuck in my head. “Sex,” I was pretty sure, meant whether you were a boy or girl, and “sin” made Tante Jans very angry, but what the two together meant I could not imagine. And so, seated next to Father in the train compartment, I suddenly asked, “Father, what is sex sin?” He turned to look at me, as he always did when answering a question, but to my surprise he said nothing. At last he stood up, lifted his traveling case from the rack over our heads, and set it on the floor.

“Will you carry it off the train, Corrie?” he said.

I stood up and tugged at it. It was crammed with the watches and spare parts he had purchased that morning.

    “It’s too heavy,” I said.

“Yes,” he said. “And it would be a pretty poor father who would ask his little girl to carry such a load. It’s the same way, Corrie, with knowledge. Some knowledge is too heavy for children. When you are older and stronger you can bear it. For now you must trust me to carry it for you.” - from The Hiding Place: The Triumphant True Story of Corrie Ten Boom

We are asking our children to carry loads that are way too heavy for them. They should not be forced, as children, to see and feel the world through the lens of adults. Innocence is worth protecting and worth fighting for. We need to do our part as parents and caregivers to carry certain things for them until they are old enough to bear the load.

Praying for your Children and Grandchildren

    COVER OUR CHILDREN (copied)

    ISAIAH 54:17

I pray that you cover my children. Give them the helmet of salvation to protect their minds against messages competing for their attention. Guard their hearts, Lord, from anger. depression, anxiety, loneliness, or anything that would make them feel unworthy of love. No weapon formed against them shall prosper. In Jesus' Name.

    PSALM 91:10

Keep your hedge of protection around them as they sleep, as they go to school, as they participate in extracurricular activities, as they get jobs. Let them fear nothing. Let no evil befall them. I know that I can't be around them every minute. I thank you, Father God, for never leaving them. In Jesus' Name. Amen.

Ways to Pray for Those in Authority

An excellent reminder to pray for those in authority

Scripture instructs us to pray for all in authority (1 Timothy 2:1-2), but how do we do that exactly? Here are several ways to pray for - our judges, police chiefs, educators, school board members, military officers, elected officials, and others who are serving our country in leadership.

    1. That they be God-fearing and recognize that they are accountable to Him for each decision and act. Proverbs 9:10

    2. That they be granted wisdom, knowledge, and understanding. James 1:5

    3. That they be presented with the gospel and a loving Christian witness. Romans 10:14

    4. That, if unsaved, that be drawn to a saving encounter with Christ; if born-again, that they be strengthened and encouraged in their faith. 1 Timothy 2:4; Ephesians 1:17-23

    5. That they recognize their own inadequacy and pray and seek the will of God. Proverbs 3:5-8; Luke 11:9-13

    6. That they be convicted of sin, transgression, and iniquity. Psalm 51:17; John 8:9

    7. That they be given godly counsel and God-fearing advisors. Proverbs 24:6

    8. That they be honest and faithful to their spouses and children. Malachi 2:15-16

    9. That they value and regard the Ten Commandments and the teachings of Christ. Psalm 19:7-11; John 8:31-32

    10. That they be honest, possess godly integrity, and desire purity avoiding drunkenness, pornography and perversion. 1 Corinthians 6:9-20; Psalm 26; Proverbs 11:3

10 Ways to Pray for Baptists in and near Ukraine

Rob Jackson, President, Romanian-American Mission, working with churches across Europe

(We have seen God answer some of these prayers already. Sid)

    1. As with Solomon, I ask God to give the Ukrainian leaders (and all leaders in these difficult times) wisdom from above (1 Kings3:5-12).

    2. As with David, I ask God to show Himself as Ukraine faces their Goliath (1 Samuel 17).  I am asking that the world will see "some trust in chariots, others trust in horses, but we trust in the name of the Lord our God" (Psalm 20:7).

    3. As with Gideon, I pray God will confuse the Russian army (like the Midianites) so they will turn on each other, become demoralized, flee and desert (Judges 7).

    4. As with Hezekiah, I ask that "Sennacherib" will return in defeat to his homeland (2 Kings 19:32-37).

    5. As with Moses, I pray the "chariots or tanks and all vehicles will get stuck in the mud, run out of gas and break down.  Furthermore, may God so thwart the Russian army that their rockets, missiles and bombs malfunction and cause minimal damage (Exodus 14:21-29).

    6. As with Elisha, I ask God to blind the enemies surrounding the cities, so they are rendered ineffective (2 Kings 6:11-23).

    7. As with Daniel, I pray God will remove the leader(s) who mocks the Lord our God. I pray Vladimir Putin will fear and see the handwriting on the wall (Daniel 5).

    8. As with Peter, I pray Baptist churches (and other churches and relief organizations) will feed the Ukrainian "sheep" in the name of Jesus. I pray the refugees who are flooding the neighboring countries seeking food, shelter, transportation, spiritual help and so forth will see Jesus in us (John 21:15-17).

    9. As with all Christians,  I pray we will be shown what each of us can do (individually and collectively) to help alleviate the suffering of our brothers and sisters in Ukraine (Matthew 25:35.

    10. Finally, I pray Ukrainians, Russians and the entire world will be amazed at what God is doing, resulting in a worldwide revival and awakening as people repent and believe the good news of Jesus Christ (Acts 2:41). There will be no lasting peace until the world acknowledges the Prince of Peace!

    Praying for Ulrainian Christians

Texas Baptist Christian Life Commission printed this prayer guide for Christians in and near Ukraine

    1. Pray for safe travel for those fleeing danger within Ukraine, for God's Presence to provide them with hope and assurance, for the churches providing refuge to have enough resources to meet the growing needs.

    2. Pray humanitarian aid funds will reach their destination, be used wisely and accomplish God's purpose.

    3. Pray for God's protection for Baptists and all Christians in Ukraine, for hope in suffering, for love toward their enemies and for the gospel to spread beyond borders.

    4. Pray for God to provide churches in Ukraine and neighboring countries with an abundance of resources and opportunities to share the gospel as they receive refugees.

    5. Pray for Baptist missionaries and others like them to be filled with God's spirit as they share the hope of the gospel and embody the sacrificial love of Christ.
