No silence - Romans 8:18-30

10/25/26: NO SILENCE: Romans 8:18-30

We look again into Romans 8, called by some the greatest chapter in the Bible: it is a chapter that begins with NO CONDITIONS and, as we will see next week, it is a chapter that ends with NO SEPARATION. But right in the middle of this great chapter, another “no” pops up: NO SILENCE: for it is a section of verses filled with noises..... not all happy ones, but GROANINGS (3 TIMES)

See if you can spot them as we read: 

“For I reckon that the sufferings of this present time are not worthy to be compared with the glory which shall be revealed in us. For the earnest expectation of the creature waiteth for the manifestation of the sons of God. For the creature was made subject to vanity, not willingly, but by reason of him who hath subjected the same in hope, Because the creature itself shall be delivered from the bondage of corruption into the glorious liberty of the children of God. For we know that the whole creation groaneth and travaileth in pain together until now. And not only they, but ourselves also, which have the first-fruits of the Spirit, even we ourselves groan within ourselves, waiting for the adoption, to wit, the redemption of our body. For we are saved by hope: but hope that is seen is not hope: for what a man seeth, why doth he yet hope for? But if we hope for that we see not, then do we with patience wait for it. Likewise the Spirit also helpeth with our infirmities: for we know not what we should pray for as we ought: but the Spirit itself maketh intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered. And he that searcheth the hearts knoweth what is the mind of the Spirit, because he maketh intercession for the saints according to the will of God. As we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose. For Whom he did foreknow, he also did predestinate to be conformed to the image of his Son, that he might be the firstborn among many brethren. Moreover whom he did predestinate, them he also called: and whom he called, them he also justified, them he also glorified.”

But did you notice another “g” word at the end of the passage? In verse 30: GLORIFY: the verb form of glory: therefore, the passage that begins with “groanings” ends with “glory”: hence, the subtitle of this message: a truth about our present & future:

FROM GROANING TO GLORY

The passage begins with a principle. Sometimes Scripture talks about the past: learn from it, don’t be held a slave by it: but here he is not talking about the past, but rather the present and the future: what we have NOW and what we will have in the future. The sufferings of this present cannot compare to the glory of the future: today is not the end; it’s going to be better.

2 additional verses shed more light

+2 Corinthians 4:17: present sufferings are TEMPORARY, not eternal, like comparing “light” to “heavy” weight.

+1 Peter 5:10: suffered a while, but eternal glory

SO, ARMED WITH THIS PRINCIPLE, LET’S DIVE IN TO THE REST OF THE PASSAGE, WHERE THERE IS NO SILENCE, BUT LOTS OF SOUNDS..... LET’S DO A “SOUND CHECK”.....

GROANING OF CREATION (22)

Sin, from the beginning, affected creation (the natural order of things):

In Gen. 3:17-19: The earth was filled with thorns and thistles and weeds. Man survived by the sweat of his brow. Adam and Eve committed sin, but the ground was cursed (collateral damage). Creation: now in a fallen world: fallen creation: pollutants and  selfishness and chemical runoff: Pollution has negatively affected ¾ of the land and 2/3 of the water. Creation is like a woman in childbirth: hurting now, but later, when new life comes: it is so much better: A NEW HEAVEN & NEW EARTH: EDEN REMADE: and it will be very good: no pollution in Heaven: glorious: from groaning to glory.

GROANING OF BELIEVERS (23)

We know this is speaking of believers: The first-fruits of the the Spirit: the Holy Spirit is the promise of what is to come: The harvest is greater than the first-fruits’;

BELIEVERS GROAN: to be a Christian does not make us immune to  pain/weakness/suffering: especially of our body: We are waiting for the REDEMPTION OF OUR BODY..

There’s nothing the matter with me, 

I’m just as healthy as I can be

 I have arthritis in both of my knees 

& when I talk, it’s with a wheeze

 My pulse is weak and my blood is thin,

but I’m awfully well for the shape I am in

 Old age is golden, I’ve heard it said;

but sometimes I wonder as I get into bed

With my ears in the drawer and my teeth in a cup

& my eyes on the table until I get up

I’m 71 years old: we plan our week by doctor visits: just wait on what is coming: A heavenly body -I can still enjoy food/go through walls: I want that body with NO PAIN, NO DEATH: NO CANCER IN HEAVEN, NO “ORGAN RECITALS” IN HEAVEN: Not only will our soul be redeemed, but also our BODIES. From groanings to glory... of the believer’s bodies.

GROANING OF THE SPIRIT (26)

A good groaning but because of a spiritual weakness we do not know how to pray as we ought: we give up too easily, we get too impatient, we pray selfishly, pray too generally: Here is what Steve really needs, Lord, grant Him this: HE HELPS US. The Holy Spirit prays according to  the will of God.... FROM GROANINGS TO GLORY BY SPIRIT.

GO-INGS OF GOD (28-30)

The real meaning of verse 28: not that everything is good, but all things can be used for good if we trust/believe/follow the Father.

29: Golden chain of salvation

FOREKNEW/PREDESTINATE: This established the rules of the “game”

CALLED: the key is to meet and have a relationship with Jesus

JUSTIFIED: forgiven, made new: another chance: just if I had....

GLORIFIED: final chapter of salvation: sin/pain/weakness forever replaced by splendor, radiance, holiness

So....grow old along with me... for the best is yet to be....

So much can be done in the final segments of life.....If I’m 71 and the average life expectancy is 79: in a football game, this would be equal to 5 minutes left in the fourth quarter, but did you know last year: the deciding score was made in the final 5 minutes of the game in ¼ of total games played. In last 5 minutes, the winning team was determined.

Read the last chapter in the Bible: we are on the winning team.

10/18/26: ROMANS 8: Part 2

Romans 8:12-17: SPIRIT LIFE

Romans 8 is called the greatest chapter in the Bible. Bach wrote an entire cantata based on this chapter. It is the lifeline to throw to someone who is in the worst condition imaginable. If the church could catch the wind of Romans 8 in its sails, you would be amazed at how far it would take us. TODAY, WE LOOK AGAIN IN THIS GREAT CHAPTER AND PULL OUT THE FOLLOWING VERSES: 12-17A

You see expressions on pillows when you’re on vacation. At a condo in Gulfshores: BEACH LIFE. In the mountains 2 weeks ago: LAKE LIFE. Today from Romans 8: SPIRIT LIFE: the Holy Spirit is  one of the central themes in Romans 8: mentioned 17x in 38 verses.

**BEACH LIFE: This invokes images of sitting on a chair, your toes in the sand, feeling the breeze. I remember earlier in my life: building sandcastles with my children and later with my grandchildren.

**LAKE LIFE: Reminds me of taking a fishing rod, digging nightcrawlers, sitting on the 

back porch sipping coffee in the morning, watching sunsets over the lake.

**SPIRIT LIFE: what is life with the Holy Spirit of God like? We need to get past the star wars idea of the force that keeps us from going to the dark side.... or jumping/yelling in church while speaking in unintelligible words....... The Holy Spirit is personal: God in Us, in the world today: what is He doing as He goes with us/in us?

Romans 8:12-17 gives insight into 3 activities of the Spirit as he journeys with us through life..... all 3 are needed;  all 3 have a positive effect on us.... all 3 result in us being  more like Christ, not less like Him.....

*the Holy Spirit kills

*the Holy Spirit leads

*the Holy Spirit assures

THE HOLY SPIRIT KILLS (12-13)

What do we do with sin? Even after we are saved, even with the Holy Spirit, sin is still VERY PRESENT in your life: sin is a constant predator that seeks your ruin: never forget how powerful it is; There is a story from Pennsylvania about Teddy (a 9 year old black bear) who was kept as a pet: but he snapped and mauled  and killed his owner: it’s a bear; that’s what bears do: that’s what sin does..... Puritan ____________got to always be killing sin or it will be killing you.

We need help: & that is where the Holy Spirit comes in: just as God the Son broke PENALTY of sin on the cross (he paid our debt), so God the Holy Spirit breaks the POWER of sin in our lives: we don’t have to say with Flip Wilson: the Devil made me do it!

We are not debtors to the flesh: we are not obligated: we don’t have to live  after the flesh (that part of life vs God: thoughts/actions).

We have a choice: we live after the flesh: we die. We let the Spirit fight for us: mortify: put to Death, we live. We escaped the penalty of sin through blood of Jesus. We escape the power of Sin through the Spirit of God.

J. D. Greear had a 5 step process for us

i) humble confession: The opposite of hiding faults and keeping them to yourself

ii) total surrender: opposite of negotiated settlement: how little do I have to do to get back on God’s good side.

iii) remember when you and God met: what you did as you met/meshed. You are God’s child because you.......

iv) listen as He calls attention to Scripture: have it memorized: pull it out & apply it: It’s His weapon: the sword of Spirit, which is Word of God: Jesus memorized Scripture and used it against the Devil...so should we

v) don’t just avoid the bad: pursue the good: Holy Spirit, what do YOU want?

THE HOLY SPIRIT LEADS (14)

THE Holy Spirit is going somewhere: It’s not stagnant: He is LEADING us into Christlikeness. Remember who you are, the son of the 1 true king: sometimes that journey is painful/slow: we want to be led to the mountaintop, & sometimes we are led to the valley: & sometimes we learn more in the valley than on the mountain (Jesus was led by the Spirit into the wilderness). We want the Holy Spirit to lead us to a place (Heaven); but He is more interested in leading us to a PERSON. I would like 3 dollars of God, please.... just enough to.....

THE HOLY SPIRIT ASSURES (15-17A)

One of the central roles of the Holy Spirit is to show you where you stand with God 

Most languages have 2 words for Father: formal and informal

Father, Daddy or Dada: Father, Abba: reach out looking for LOVE AND CARE

Even the best dads will let us down and eventually leave us... we still search for that  LOVE AND CARE: The relationships, reputation, romance, financial security: AND GOD ANSWERS THAT YEARNING THROUGH CHRIST.

THE SPIRIT OF ADOPTION: I am fully loved, I am fully cared for: come what may  others may push me away: God draws me close; other may forsake me, but God forgives and that changes everything: no matter the circumstances, I am held by my Father who will always be with me and never let go.

FOR.... I AM A CHILD OF THE KING

It’s ok to visit the beach life, lake life, mountain life, even Biltmore life....

but it’s much better to have the SPIRIT LIFE

10/11/26 ROMANS 8: No Condemnation: Romans 8:1-2

ROMANS 8 is one of the most uplifting, encouraging chapters in Scripture: The believer will never be “blown over” if he is resting behind the walls of Romans 8; a series of biblical thoughts and promises that begins with NO CONDEMNATION.

Joe McKeever said “if Romans is a gold mine of promises and power for the believer, then Romans 8 is the “mother lode” of that gold mine

         John Piper: greatest book in world is Bible

         greatest letter in book is Romans

         greatest chapter in letter is 8

         greatest verse in chapter is 1

For 7 chapters, Paul has been declaring the Gospel to be true. Jesus came, Jesus died, Jesus was raised.... Jesus saves. Now in Romans 8, the great apostle answers the question: IF THE GOSPEL IS TRUE, IF JESUS CAN SAVE, HOW DOES IT CHANGE YOUR LIFE? WHAT DIFFERENCE DOES JESUS MAKE IN YOUR LIFE? How can Jesus WITH you, Jesus IN you change how you see your SELF, your PROBLEMS, and your WORLD?

One of the key themes in Romans 8 is FREEDOM: Christ has set us free, but most religious people (believers) do not FEEL FREE, because they are caught up in 2 traps: the PERFORMANCE trap and the PRETENDING trap....

PERFORMANCE: You have to maintain a certain standard for God to accept/bless you: if not, God will punish you, even to the extent of some denominations, they cut you off and send you to hell (lost after saved)

You ask yourself every time something bad happens, have I been good enough, or is God paying me back for something I thought or said: constant anxiety.

PRETENDING: when the Christian is trying to act on the outside like he has it all together even when he does not feel like it on the inside: IMPORTANCE OF IMAGE: how are you doing?  (I’m fine/blessed) when inside there are not smiles but tears (now I know: when someone asks.... they do not really want to  know: if they do, they real good friend)..... but this is a trap we get into... a way we think: It has been described as trying to hold a beach ball under water... every now and then it pops up and out (anger/materialism), and we have to push it back under.

ROMANS 8 CAN FREE US FROM BOTH OF THESE TRAPS.... LET’S BEGIN

THEREFORE: the most powerful “therefore” in Scripture: comes right after Paul had lamented in 7:15, 19, 24. So, how much condemnation can I expect? how much punishment since I continue to struggle? The answer is NONE,  only through Jesus: THER IS NO CONDEMNATION . CONDEMNATION is a legal term: a charge placed, a debt owed, but if I am IN JESUS, there is no debt, it no longer exists, because Jesus paid the debt by His death on the cross: JESUS PAID IT ALL.

Charles Spurgeon: for those in Christ, it would be unjust for God to hold the Believer responsible for sin, because that would require 2 payments.

I set my air conditioning at 55 degrees: My wife pays the bill but the electric company comes after me, because I am the one who turned thermostat down: no, she paid the bill and you have no claim over me.

IN CHRIST there’s another truth: not just past sins, but future ones too are forgiven.  When we are saved: we think past sins: The slate is wiped clean at that  moment...but what about when we spill coffee on page in future? THINK ABOUT IT: your sins were all future when Jesus died (you were not here yet), so when He died for you: He forgave all sins you have or ever will commit. THAT MEANS: There is nothing you can do right now to make Jesus love you any more and nothing you can do right now to make Jesus love you any less...WE THINK: God loves me more when I do this.... God loves me less when I do this....No, He may approv or disapprove but He still loves His child.

Author/Pastor Rankin Wilbourne said “God doesn’t love you to the degree that you are LIKE Christ (because we all fall short); God loves you to the degree that you are IN CHRIST and that is 100%.

THAT FREES US FROM THE PERFORMANCE TRAP

I am never unsure of His love for me: He gives me unconditional love and absolute acceptance

THAT FREES US FROM THE PRETENDING TRAP

I don’t have to pretend everything is all right, because all of the stuff I don’t want you to know about, that I am ashamed of, embarrassed about, Christ has already seen and already declared: for this, IN CHRIST: There is no condemnation. Long may the accuser roar of sins that I have done. I know them all and thousands more, but the Lord knoweth none.

FOR THOSE WHO WALK..... How do we know there is no condemnation? because of the

Spirit’s WORK in me: I am following a new leader: this life is giving me the power of the SPIRIT. Works do not save, but they are an evidence that you are saved: Jerry Clower said “I am not a judge, but I am qualified to be a fruit inspector”.  I’ve been forgiven, I’ve been changed. Dwight L Moody said “Clothes make the man: but put a leper in new clothes and he still a leper: not an old man in new clothes, but a new man in old clothes.

SO, WHAT IS THE APPLICATION?  2 THINGS TO TAKE WITH US: WALK THERE & HERE

WALK THERE: if the Gospel is true, if Jesus does make a difference, then how can we not tell people? How

can we not desire that the Gospel is spread to every country in the world? Certainly, God does not call

everyone to permanently move overseas, but He does call everyone to be a part of the process: to go or to pray or support.

WALK HERE: Jesus: thy sins are forgiven: rise, take your bed and walk (John 5)

“If not in you, I wonder how they will ever see the One who really cares

If not from you, how will they find there is One who heals the broken and gives sight to the blind

Cause you’re the only Jesus some will ever see

and you’re the only words of life some will ever read

So let them see in you the One in whom is all they’ll ever

need, cause you’re the only J some will ever see”

THIS WEEK, LET’S WALK IN JESUS....with NO CONDEMNATION

OCTOBER 5, 2026 – REV. GRANT MCELVEEN

I was here in 1968 as a new Pastor. I have been Associate Pastor for Raymond Rd Baptist Church. I was married in Copiah County, we have 2 children and 5 grandchildren. I also served in Farmhaven in Madison County, in Meridian, Barefoot Springs, Antioch and most recently in Puckett, home of 300 friendly folks and a few old soreheads.

I have a 13 year old lawnmower. As a retired Pastor, I cut my own yard. I’ve tried to keep that lawnmower alive, but it’s approximately 78 ½ years old in human years. A little piece of plastic fell off, shutting the whole thing down. Just like us, a lot of parts break down. The power of Christ in us increases the promise of assurance. 

Colossians, Chapter 1 asks “Who is Jesus Christ?” This is who we serve, my Savior. Not just some long haired dude who wore sandals. Verse 15 calls Him the Invisible image of God. The word Image in Greek means Icon. I’ve got a computer, I know what an icon is. In 1965, in college, the library of science contained all the knowledge of the world, all the reference books, that’s where the knowledge was. Now, I just find the G on my phone and it can tell me anything, it’s a miracle.

The whole Bible is about one person, He is the icon of the Living God. The disciples asked to see the Father. Do you now know who I Am? If you’ve seen Me, you have seen the Father in the flesh. Jesus Christ is the firstborn overall creator. He had the power, the authority. What gives Him that right? Because He created all creation, in heaven and in earth, visible and invisible, by Him and for Him. 

We spend a lot of time watching our grandchild cheer at a ballgame. I’m trying to see, the sun’s in my eyes. When the sun is moving 1000 miles an hour, why does it take so long for the sun to set? Scientists tell us that it is 67,000 miles around the sun -365 days, 6 hours and 9 minutes. The Solar System travels through the Milky Way at about 500,000 miles per hour. Jesus created all that. Why did He go to all that trouble? 

Our energy comes from Jesus Christ. There will be a lot of tough winters, heartaches and pain. But everything glorifies God. The oldest living thing in the world is a tree in Eastern California, not a redwood, not a sequoia, a scrawny thing really, where nothing else lives. It’s 4858 years old, one root provides life to the branches. A real child of God cannot be fooled about Jesus.

THE EAGLE HAS LANDED: Isaiah 40:31 et al.

Sunday, July 20, 1969: 3:17 in afternoon: In Houston, Transmission “ Tranquility Base here: THE EAGLE HAS LANDED”: the lunar module: 6.5 hours later came Neil Armstrongs famous words ...one small step....

The eagle has been symbolic of much: In New Testament times: In the Roman Empire, and today: The eagle is a symbol of the USA, and in the Bible: a metaphor for God’s actions toward us and God’s hope for us.....

Before we leave Isaiah 40, let us look once more at that great FINAL VERSE of the chapter; let us look this morning at the biblical metaphor of an eagle, as we examine and learn of 4 ministries of God for us, each of them from an Old Testament verse that mentions .... THE EAGLE GOD SAVES US: Exodus 19:4

The children of Israel were hemmed in: to their sides: a barren wastleland: to their front: the Sea of Reeds, to their rear: Pharoah’s army: they couldn’t look for deliverance to the right/left; they couldn’t look to front/rear:  BUT THEY COULD LOOK UP

Exodus 14:13: STAND STILL AND SEE...God did not ask them to swim the sea or  fight the army, We are not to focus on ourselves & what we can do, but on God & what He can do: .and God swooped down like an eagle and delivered them from their enemies; God would remind the  people in Exodus 19:4: it was like I was carrying you ON EAGLES WINGS

WINGS OF AN EAGLE: place of strength & security

We are surrounded by evil: enslaved to sin and bondage with no way out. We cannot save ourselves: what to do? Salvation comes from beyond ourselves, from God: John 3:3: literally: FROM ABOVE: a new kind, different kind from beyond self: that which is born....flesh/spirit

THE EAGLE HAS LANDED: God’s salvation in the form of Jesus who came to 

SEEK and to SAVE the lost, completely defeating our enemies of sin/death.

Have you been saved? Have you been carried ON EAGLES WINGS from dark to light, from bondage to freedom, from lost to saved?

GOD SHAKES US: Deuteronomy 32:11-12

In the farewell address of Moses: he describes the scene he had watched before as a  shepherd in the wilderness, the shaking of the nest: eaglets lived a life of comfort for the first 8 to 10 weeks: they were over fed and under exercised: It was all give me, give me, give me, but after 10 weeks, something very traumatic happens to these little birds: the parents start shaking the nest: pulling it apart, almost destroying their home: sometimes they even PUSH OUT the young. Sometimes CARRY/RELEASE: seems so cruel: why? BECAUSE THEY WERE MADE TO FLY.

PARABLE OF THE EAGLE AND THE CHICKEN

An eaglet had fallen from the nest . The farmer finds him and takes him home, puts him with the chickens. He starts to think he IS a chicken but he cannot walk properly or even eat properly. A naturalist takes the eagle higher and higher to the roof and tells him to fly like an eagle but the eagle always returns to the chickens. The naturalist finally takes him to a mountain and there, away from the chickens, he soars.

The eagle parents make sure that does not happen to their young: & understand: they are always nearby: hovering/watching/caring/lift and repeat: like Peggy & myself with our girls: learning to ride the bicycle: running along.....catching..... what does our FATHER see when he looks at us? Are we content to stay in the nest? Are we overfed and under exercised (spiritually)? GOD WANTS YOU TO LEARN/MATURE/FLY through the practice of prayer, Bible study, worship: MICAH 6:8 “He hath shewed thee, O man, what is good; and what doth the Lord require of thee, but to do justly, and to love mercy, and to walk humbly with thy God”

God wants you to mature: not stay as spiritual children:not to stay in our rocking chair and wait for Heaven, but to take flight with Him see where your flight takes you today: not made to be a chicken....but an eagle

GOD STRENGTHENS US: Isaiah 40:31

The everlasting God of creation wants to give me strength for the tasks at hand:  sometimes life is running (better); sometimes life is walking (keeping): God gives us HIS APPROPRIATE GIFT for our situation

RENEW means literally to exchange: you get in an automobile, you exchange your power  for its power: the greater power: 2 Cor. 12:9: my power finds its completion in the exchange of your weakness: THEY ARE WEAK BUT HE IS STRONG. MOUNT UP WITH WINGS: the eagle in the wind: not trying so hard, flap, flap, flap, but it spreads its wings, and let the winds of the storms cause him to rise above the storm: as the song finds it’s ultimate fulfillment: 

YOU ARE THE WIND BENEATH MY WINGS

God wants to strengthen us: He does not want us to fail; He wants us to fly

What has God asked you to do that you haven’t done yet?

Why haven’t you? His strength is there: PHILIPPIANS 4:13

GOD SATISFIES US: Psalm 103:5

An eagle is renewed every so often: IT’S THE PROCESS OF MOLTING: An eagle’s feathers get old, brittle, dry: these damaged feathers become dangerous to the eagle as they lead to loss of strength and accuracy so, for a season, the eagle is ONE UGLY BIRD to look at as the old drops off and the new comes in; but the new brings a renewal of strength and beauty; like the eagle is young again: he can do again what he used to before molting & for us, this renewal of youth has nothing to do with PHYSICAL years, but SPIRITUAL ONES: we find new ways to serve, new power to say no to Satan and yes to God, new purpose in the people God continues to bring into our lives: 

HE CAN STILL USE US

What is the KEY to this SPIRITUAL VITALITY, even in advancing years? How does He satisfy us?: look at first of the verse: good food that satisfies: WHAT IS OUR FOOD AS CHRISTIANS? 

Matthew 4:4 “But he answered and said, It is written, Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God:

Jeremiah 15:16 “And the people to whom they prophesy shall be cast out in the streets of Jerusalem because of the famine and the sword, and they shall have none to bury them, them, their wives, nor their sons, nor their daughters: for I will pour their wickedness upon them.”

1 Peter 2:2: “As newborn babes, desire the sincere milk of the word, that ye may grow thereby”

9/20/26 This is Our God - Isaiah 40:12-27

ROCK PAPER SCISSORS.... rock crushes scissors, paper hides rock, scissors cut the paper. Each has a particular strength & particular weaknesses: they are like us: some things at which we are better than other things, BUT NOT GOD: He is good in ALL things and weak in NONE.....

Isaiah 40:12-28 speaks of this incomparable God:

*40:12: powerful creator God: no one can do what He can do

*40:15: all the nations are but a drop in the bucket: can’t compare to Him

Our God is strong: 40:26 This God, this all powerful, all knowing God wants to share His strength with us!: 40:29

In these verses, the prophet Isaiah lists 3 qualifications for receiving God’s strength; let’s make sure we fulfill them.....

IF YOU REMEMBER TO WORSHIP HIM

They are complaining about God: 27: They think that God is hiding: God is disregarding them.  He acknowledges what they are saying without agreeing: the real problem is you are not focusing on God: you are not WORSHIPPING Him: Verse 26 begins with words of worship: LIFT UP and BEHOLD. This is not new: you should know this; you should understand this; you  should practice this: why people do not come to worship: There are human reasons but worship is first and foremost not encountering other people but encountering God: one of the few activities on earth that also in Heaven. It’s all about God: one of hardest verses in Bible is Genesis 1:1: “In the beginning, God” If you can get past that, if you believe that, God knows what He is doing.....

IF YOU REMEMBER TO ACKNOWLEDGE WEAKNESS TO HIM (29)

The contrast between verses 28 and 29: we have trouble with this.  Muhammed Ali, on an airplane was asked to sit down and fasten his seatbelt. He loudly proclaimed “Superman don’t need no seat belt”. The flight attendant answered “superman don’t need no plane either”. We are not as strong as we think we are: it only takes one letter, one trip to the doctor, one phone call in the middle of the night. 

King UZZIAH started out so well: God “strengthened” him: he trusts himself, and God puts him in his place: he contracted leprosy: he dies lonely in an isolated house. We cannot depend on humanity: we all have weakness.

091226: “Gentle Shepherd”: Isaiah 40:6-11 (11)

A famous actor was once the guest of honor at a social gathering where he received many requests to recite favorite excerpts from various literary works. An elderly preacher who was also there asked the actor to recite the 23rdPsalm. The actor agreed on the condition that the preacher would also recite it. Now the actor’s recitation was beautifully and powerfully given, with perfect diction and dramatic emphasis. He received a hearty applause. The preacher’s voice was rough and broken and his diction

was far from polished. But when he finished, there was not a dry eye in the room. When someone asked the actor what made the difference, he replied, “I knew the Psalm, but he knows the Shepherd.”

Do you know the GOOD SHEPHERD? The final verse in our next section of Isaiah 40 paints an extraordinary picture of WHO CHRIST IS....... let’s read Isaiah 40:6-11....

The enduring Word of God does not fade: I recently saw an ad for artificial mums:  they stay vibrant for an entire season even though they are not seasonal here, but they eternal bloom. BEHOLD YOUR GOD: take a moment: step away from the business of life and focus; ever notice how we tend to look at everything else BUT Christ:  LOOK AT HIM.

Imagine two different images of Christ: in one, a strong hand/mighty arm, ruling in power: this is the Christ who deals with all of our enemies: He defeated the Despondency (guilt)...the Devil...Death itself.... He has VANQUISHED them all and saved us: the all conquering warrior: the King of kings and Lord of lords; we will not face  anyone or anything more powerful than Jesus: PHILIPPIANS 4:13. In the second image, a very different picture: the picture of tenderness,  gentleness, patience, longsuffering understanding. These are 2 different pictures, but not 2 different people: they are  2 sides of the same coin: 2 witnesses of the same essence: & that’s good: because WE NEED BOTH: sometimes we need the power, and sometimes we need the tenderness.

So, let’s camp out for a moment at this second picture, this final verse of the passage and think about Christ as the GOOD AND GENTLE SHEPHERD (as we do, we will also look to a New Testament passage, John 10, where Jesus Himself further expounds & explains   who He is as the GOOD SHEPHERD.

RELATIONSHIP WITH THE SHEPHERD

HIS FLOCK: what is a Christian? someone in particular relationship with the Lord Jesus Christ: part of HIS flock: not everyone is: Jesus said: my sheep & not my sheep: everyone not in that relationship; everyone is not a Christian. & what decides that is NOT what country you are in (CHRISTIAN NATION VERSUS THE CHRISTIAN PEOPLE IN THAT NATION).  & what decides that is NOT what church you are in: & what decides that is NOT what family you are a part of or what line of work you are in or how popular, rich, smart you are..... WHAT DECIDES IS HAVE YOU BELIEVED.....; AT THIS MOMENT, you are either saved or lost, Christian/or not/HIS SHEEP/OR NOT HIS SHEEP... & He cares for them.... LIKE A SHEPHERD: a personal concern, individually, one by one.

He sees me even from Heaven; HE has a special interest in me, HE knows me by name, HE knows how many hairs are on my head (HE knows me better than I know myself: and my sins, and IN SPITE OF: Romans 5:8.

Back to HIS FLOCK: we are HIS FLOCK, because He bought us.... Jesus said: John 10:11-14: our shepherd is not a paid hireling: HE BOUGHT US

-Paul: you have been bought with a price: 1 Cor. 6:20

-Peter: bought not with silver/gold but with precious blood of Christ

-1 Peter 1:18-19: we belong to Him, so we have NO RIGHT to go out and do what we   want to.......

Invictus: I am the master of my fate, I am the captain of my soul

Christian’s answer: I have no fear though straight the gate

He cleared from punishment the scroll

Christ is the Master of my fate

Christ is the captain of my soul

WE ARE HIS FLOCK: WE HAVE A PARTICULAR, CARING RELATIONSHIP WITH THE SHEPHERD, WHO BOUGHT US

THE BENEFITS OF THE RELATIONSHIP WITH THE SHEPHERD

There are many, but Isaiah lists 3, still using the sheep/ shepherd metaphor... 3 that are further echoed in Jesus’  more detailed explanation of this concept in John 10

THE GIVER: SHALL FEED HIS FLOCK: FEED: tend them, give them what they need: John 10:9: find pasture (green pastures). What has God given? salvation, promises,  forgiveness: the list could go on: GOD IS A GIVING GOD: John 3:16: “the gift goes on”: so we can give the gift of love...

THE GUARD: GATHER & CARRY: them close to Himself: John 10:10: not a hired hand that does not care and will leave them at the  mercy of enemies: even to eternity: I keep watch over them forever: John 10:27-29

THE GUIDE: GENTLY LEADS: the most vulnerable: the expectant ewes, A guide told his tour group all he knew about the shepherds I the field. The shepherd coming toward them was behind the sheep pushing them forward. He told the shepherd “ I always thought shepherds led their flock: I even told my group a good shepherd never chases/drives the sheep”  THAT’S VERY TRUE, BUT I’M NOT THE SHEPHERD LEADING THEM TO PASTURE AND DRINK: I’M THE BUTCHER DRIVING THEM TO THEIR DEATH.

A shepherd uses the staff: the crook, because they get off course and need correcting.

WHAT A SHEPHERD: HE PROMISES TO GIVE, TO GUARD, AND TO GUIDE: think I will follow.....HE IS MY SHEPHERD, A GENTLE SHEPHERD

Gentle Shepherd come and lead us

For we need you to help us find our way

Gentle Shepherd, come and feed us

For we need your strength from day to day.

There’s no other we can turn to

9/6/26: TIDINGS OF COMFORT AND JOY: Isaiah 40:1-5

Title of this sermon: TIDINGS OF COMFORT AND JOY: I’ve heard that before (The Christmas Carol): indeed you have, from a carol that we sing: GOD REST YE MERRY GENTLEMEN: written by an unknown author from the 15th-16thcenturies: sung by street people as a more happy alternative to some of the more somber Latin hymns... It appears in Charles Dickens’ A CHRISTMAS CAROL . A young caroler stops at the door to Scrooge’s counting house and begins to sing that song: Scrooge hears, takes a ruler and attacks the door with such fury that the child runs away into the fog... WE ACTUALLY MIS-SING (misunderstand) the first line: God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen: The comma comes after merry, not gentlemen: the song is not talking about happy merry people: merry strong

SO, May God keep you strong and prosperous..... gentlemen, let nothing you dismay; in a world often challenging to live in.... remember Christ, who helps us: REMEMBER CHRIST OUR SAVIOR  BORN ON CHRISTMAS DAY..... CHORUS: THIS IS: TIDINGS OF COMFORT AND JOY***

Well, if anyone needed some COMFORT and JOY, it was God’s people when Isaiah 40 was penned... CONTEXT: God’s people were isolated, depressed, insecure, uncertain: many had given up on God (where is He...why would He)... but GOD HAD NOT GIVEN UP ON THEM......

God had some TIDINGS OF COMFORT AND JOY that His people needed to hear.... that we need to hear (for things do not always go right/well with us, either).... 4 thoughts from this passage:

PROCLAMATION....PREPARATION....TRANSFORMATION..... REVELATION

PROCLAMATION (1-2) God gives an assignment to His messengers for His people: while the real  speaker is God (3,6.9), He chooses to send His message through human instruments.

WHAT? message of good news: COMFORT (emphasized twice): there, there now, now or my, my; comfort when warfare is ended, iniquity pardoned, when they had received all  punishment necessary: God said: THAT’S ENOUGH: they brought it on themselves by not listening/obeying, they started it, but God in mercy ends it: Eudora Henderson: and it came to pass: not forever....some things are forever: but suffering and punishment is not forever for God’s people.  GOD FORGIVES SIN: Isaiah 43:25

HOW? SPEAK TENDERLY to the city (people): & these despondent down and out people needed to hear words of tender comfort: & GOD GAVE THEM WHAT THEY NEEDED, EVEN DOWN TO THE WAY THEY NEEDED TO HEAR IT O for the wonderful love He has promised, promised for you and for me....

GOD GIVES TO US WHAT WE NEED IN THE WAY WE NEED IT: what do you need today? comfort/challenge/love/patience/guidance/strength

PREPARATION (3)

They were in a barren place and they had barren lives: & God was going to enter where they were in order to change where they were; to understand that this road, this highway was not for them to go out, but for God to come in: to enter into their sadness/loneliness and make it better. It would be echoed years later in ultimate fulfillment: JOHN THE BAPTIST: also in a  barren land (600 feet below sea level): God is coming to deal with  barren empty sinful lives: until one day: THERE HE IS. We are all in the line of John The Baptist: for we preach a message of PREPARATION:  IN THE WORDS OF AMOS: prepare to meet thy God...ARE YOU PREPARED? He has done His part.... built the road to come to you.... meet Him... PREPARE.

TRANSFORMATION (4)

First- the messenger: proclaim the message of comfort and preparation: but beginning with #3: GOD: some things only God can do. Valleys lifted up and mountains made low: God deals with the obstacles in our lives: He levels it out, makes it bearable (Psalm 23:4); ISAIAH 45:2: HE CAN MAKE THE ROUGH WAY SMOOTH. Only God can do that: transform a life: ROMANS 12:1-2: THE STORY OF PARCHMAN PENITENTIARY: Starting church plant: asking to be  relocated to start churches in other facilities.

It is time to listen to what God is saying; see what God is doing: our part is to ALLOW, and then God does the rest: He does the saving; I do the letting.

REVELATION (5)

GLORY: who He is: His character: love, light, merciful, forgiving, holy, gracious, redeemer. Some people see God as a vending machine: They only come when they need: give me what I want. GOD IS PERSONAL, LOVING, PATIENT, FORGIVING, GRACIOUS.

THE CHALLENGE: to bring His reputation up to His character: THROUGH OUR LIVES: Matthew 5:16: 2 Corinthians: YOU ARE OUR LETTERS. SOMETIMES IT IS POOR WRITING: well if that’s what a Christian is like.....

we are the only Bible the careless world will read

we are the sinner’s gospel; we are the scoffer’s creed

we are the Lord’s last message, given in world and deed

what if the type is crooked, what if the print is blurred

what if our hands are busy with other work than His?

what if our feet are walking where sin’s allurement is?

what if our tongue is speaking of things His lips would spurn?

how can we hope to help Him or welcome His return?

Let’s do our part to make Christ known: so that his REPUTATION AND CHARACTER are the same!

Well, Scrooge did finally realize the “tidings of comfort and joy” about Christmas: he awoke from his final dream and immediately showed his changed heart by purchasing a turkey for the Cratchitt family, giving an enormous anonymous sum of money to charity, and promising medical care for Tiny Tim; it was said in the end that “he knew how to keep Christmas well, if any man alive possessed the knowledge”

BUT DON’T MISS THIS: it all began when he encountered Jacob Marley: a ghost, a man come back from the dead, who warned him of his need to change....and challenged him to learn the lessons from the 3 spirits of Christmas past, present, and future

That’s how change comes for us as well: when we encounter one come back from the dead: not a disembodied ghost but a resurrected Lord Jesus: CHANGE CAN HAPPEN: life can be better, more positive, and productive in Jesus: John 10:10: why He came... what He can do

for us and in us......

This truly is: TIDINGS OF COMFORT AND JOY

8/23/26: I AM: Sustenance: John 15:1-8

I AM: 2 words that describe who Jesus is: I cannot be contained in a box or an idol or even a Temple: I will BE whatever I will be.... 2 words that meet our deepest needs: if you’re hungry: He is the Bread of Life, if you’re frightened, He is the Door to safety/security; if you’re wandering,  I AM the true and living way.... & TODAY: IF YOU’RE WEAK, I AM the source of strength.....

A circus strongman offered $200 to anyone who could squeeze another drop from a lemon that had already been wrung out. Several tried unsuccessfully. Then, to the snickering of the crowd, a frail older lady stepped up, clamped it in her hands, and, to the amazement of all, squeezed out not a drop, but a tablespoon of juice. When the strongman paid her, he asked her secret: PRACTICE, she said.... I HAVE BEEN 

TREASURER OF THE LOCAL BAPTIST CHURCH FOR 42 YEARS, AND I AM QUITE USED TO SQUEEZING CONTRIBUTIONS FROM RELUCTANT GIVERS.

There are different kinds of strength: physical: World Record for deadlift is 1124 in Iceland, emotional: getting through the valley of the shadow as your loved one transitions to the final phase of life; and spiritual: dealing with habits that are non-God honoring or resisting temptations thrown at us from an unbelieving world or from Satan himself..... and, when WE are spiritually weak, the great I AM has a word for US: I am THE VINE; you are THE BRANCHES.....

As we unpack that phrase today from John 15:5 and the surrounding verses, may we learn that its meaning and application has something to do with 

*CONNECTING

*ABIDING

*PRUNING

*BEARING

CONNECTING (1,5)

The metaphor of the vine or vineyard appears over 200 times in the Bible: Israel called God’s vineyard in Isaiah 5: some Jewish coinage during IB period had a vine  inscribed: a golden vine adorned the door to the Holy Palace. Jesus said: but I AM THE TRUE VINE: I am the true representative of where you have fallen short. Speaking of the GRAPEVINE: Father is husbandman (owner); Jesus is the vine, we are the branches: vine/branches: sustenance flows from vine to the branches: what do they call a disengaged branch? DEAD. ONCE WE CONNECT: we are connected forever: John 10:27-29; 3:16 Are you connected?

ABIDING (4)

Meaning: staying, remain, keeping in close contact. What is the KEY to living the Christian life? MATTHEW EMMONS lost a certain Olympic gold medal at the 2004 Athens Games when he fired his final shot into the target of the competitor in the next lane. Sometimes we hit wrong target: We can read the Bible, we can pray, we can tithe, go to church memorize scripture 18x a day, give exorbitant amounts, be always in the temple: BUT ALL OF THESE ARE RELIGIOUS DEEDS, WHILE NOT BAD, THEY ARE NOT THE END: MEANS TO AN END: THE KEY IS TO ABIDE: stay/remain/be so close, not move away. It is not about WHAT WE DO, but about WHO WE KNOW: Matthew 7:21-23

Not a ritual, but a relationship. How much do you think like Jesus, act like Jesus? HOW LONG DO PEOPLE HAVE TO LOOK AT YOU BEFORE THEY THINK OF HIM? Matthew 5:16: Yes, shine your light: see your good works so that they see HIM: a means to an end.

PRUNING (2)

It’s hard to grow grapes: it’s a year round commitment: in the winter you must cut plants back/repair trellis; In the spring: get vines off ground and onto trellis; In the summer: water: There is the constant challenge of disease/insects: if want to enjoy grapes at harvest season, you must work all other seasons. The Father prunes: not to hurt the plant but to give it better chance of productivity. GRAPES: TOO CONNECTED TO EARTH: grow roots, not fruit: cut them off, put them on trellis: WE GET TOO ONNECTED TO THE WORLD: what habits do we have, what friends do we have?: how do we use our time/talents? WE NEED PRUNING: If you could kick someone for causing most of your troubles, you wouldn’t be able to sit down for a week. Another word for pruning: catharsis: where we get the term cath lab: A MODERN DAY MRI: WHAT A WONDERFUL TOOL, one saved my life in 2005.

BEARING (8)

The purpose of the vine is to BEAR FRUIT: YOUR FATHER’S WILL: how you please Him:

how you know if you’re saved: You have to be a fruit inspector. There are 2 types of fruit: one is fruit of spirit in Galatians 5; the other is related to GIFT: what can I do: answer is YES

HOW DO YOU DO IT? CONNECT....ABIDE....PRUNED: and you WILL bear

Don’t say I can’t: I will say: God can... and if He wants you to do it, He will supply the strength and ability to do it

Philippians 4:13: not mean you will, but you CAN

8/30/26: I AM: COMPLETION: Revelation 22:13

Centrum Silver is more complete than any other vitamin from A to Zinc (and every vitamin/mineral you need in between): a reference on the use of the first and last letters of the alphabet to show COMPLETENESS.

But long before Centrum, Jesus did the same thing: in the last book of the New Testament, He calls attention to the COMPLETENESS of His power and person by using the first and last letters of the GREEK ALPHABET: in the Gentile world, those who spoke Greek would have understood this as a reference to the eternal nature of Jesus.

Revelation 1:8 – I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the ending, saith the Lord,  which is, and which was, and which is to come, the Almighty.

Revelation 21:6 – And he said unto mem It is done. I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the end. I will give unto him that is athrist of the fountain of he water of life freely,

Revelation 22:13 – I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the end, the first and the last.

What does this say to us?  As we unpack this final Scriptural I AM saying this morning, 

let us see it as a reminder of HE IS

*WHO He is

*WHEN He is

*WHAT He does

WHO He is 

I AM: back to Exodus 3: YAHWEH: the eternal being, the one who exists: into perpetuity: He has always been, He will always be. He said unto Moses, this is how you are to introduce me to my People: what I want them to know and remember: WHO I AM by using that same name in Greek: ego eimi: Jesus is claiming the same existence as God: the (enemies) knew exactly what He was saying/implying: Isaiah 41:4, 43:10, 44:6: greater than any man/angel/martyr/philosopher: HE IS GOD: nothing is hidden  from Him; He is never surprised by anything; no one can overcome Him; HE IS in sovereign control. So, in this last chapter of the last book, before you have that final great invitation (22:17), John says: pause and realize WHO IT IS that is giving the invitation (WHEN WE GET AN INVITATION: whether or not we respond may well depend on who it is)  consider WHO IS OFFERING: when HE INVITES YOU, YOU SHOULD RESPOND.

WHEN He Is

Three descriptors that speak to time: Always/Often, First/Last, Beginning/End: that Jesus did not begin in Bethlehem, that He existed before Creation: 

Genesis 1:1,26: LET US; the majesty of the Godhead:  one essence, 3 persons.

Paul delved into this: Colossians 1:16-19: He encompasses all:  He started before and will be when all that we know here ends. In Hebrew, ETERNAL LIFE lasts to the vanishing point: how far is our Vanishing Point? Man has discovered galaxies 13 billion light years away (Imagine jumping on av ray of light going 186k miles a second: go past the moon in 1.25 minutes and the sun in 8.20 minutes: & this is 13 billion light years, AND THIS IS WHAT WE SEE: what beyond that: In Hebrew: ETERNITY is beyond the vanishing point: as far as you go back and as far as you go forward, JESUS EXISTS.

WHAT HE DOES

HE LOVES ME: this eternal, everlasting, all powerful God: loves us: not because but in spite of who we are: enough to send Jesus: John 3:16: this Jesus =loves me before and after I was born, I was only a blip on the radar, but for reasons I will never understand, he wants me to spend ETERNITY with Him and be with Him even beyond the Vanishing Point. 

HE OFFERS ME: 1 John 5:11-13: Eternal Life in Jesus, eternity with Jesus. How long will we live? 79 is the median age now. On the internet, there is a countdown clock: you enter some info about yourself.  I should live until October 2039. 13years, 1 month, 

3 days, I was told when considering heart surgery in 2005, that my life expectancy without surgery was 3 years. I LOVE LIFE: I want to stay as long as I’m not a burden, not beyond body’s usefulness. BUT I LOVE ETERNAL LIFE EVEN MORE: so when this heart wears out, and this heart stops beating: I WILL NOT STOP. HE COMPLETES ME: He finishes what He begins: Philippians 1:6: He does not give up or let go: HE LOVES ME, OFFERS ME, COMPLETES ME.

Alfred Nobel: best known for Nobel Peace Prize: a lessor known is fact is that he also invented dynamite: he was a chemist, an engineer, innovator and a weapon’s manufacturer. In 1888, his brother Ludvig died. A French newspaper erroneously published Alfred’s obituary instead and condemned him for his invention of dynamite, stating: “the merchant of death is dead”. “Dr. Alfred Nobel, who became rich by finding

ways to kill more people faster than ever before, died yesterday”. Nobel was devastated by the foretaste of how he would be remembered. His last will and testament set aside the bulk of his estate to establish the NOBEL PRIZES. He gave the equivalent of a quarter of a billion dollars to fund such prizes. Alfred Nobel had the rare opportunity to evaluate his life and live long enough to change that assessment. And so can we: may we be remembered that we connected with Jesus, & in so doing, received His offer of Eternal Life: so that now, or into the future, we are with Him, as far as the eye can see, and even beyond the Vanishing Point.

Forever I’ll sing of His great love for me

For all of my life, it’s Jesus & me
